BAMAPREPS Top 10 Week 1

With the 2023 season getting into full swing, let's take a look at our first BamaPreps Top 10!


1 Thompson

The Warriors once again enter as the No. 1 team in the state. Mark Freeman's bunch did not skip a beat downing Opelika 44-13 in their opener. Thompson's journey continues with a regional clash against Vestavia on the horizon.

2 Saraland

The Spartans started off 2023 with a bang, defeating nationally ranked Lipscomb Academy (TN) in a thriller on ESPN. Jeff Kelly's team now turns towards region play with a clash against Mobile foe Murphy.

3 Central Phenix City

The Red Devils had a statement over Hewitt-Trussville in week zero defeating the Hewitt-Trussville Huskies 48-24. Starting QB Andrew Alford impressed throwing for over 400 Yards and 5 Touchdowns. Central will face Smiths Station in region next.

4 Auburn

Auburn comes in fourth after a staple win against powerhouse Hoover. The Tigers dominated the second half winning 39-14. Coming off a 2nd State title berth in 4 years, Keith Ethridge's Squad looks to get over the hump. They will play in another big matchup this week as they face the Enterprise Wildcats.

5 Clay Chalkville

Drew Gilmer leads Clay Chalkville into 2023 after a disappointing end to their 2022 season. The Cougars opened with a 31-0 shutout over Briarwood. The big story this off-season was the move to QB for star Athlete Jaylen Mbakwe. He now try's to lead the Cougars back to the promise land. Clay will play Hueytown next.

6 Vestavia


The Rebels finally got over the hump Defeating Mountain Brook 35-10 on the road. Vestavia now turns towards region play, a quick bout with Homewood will be followed up with one of the toughest schedules in the state. First Thompson, then Hoover and Spain Park. If you want to be the best, you have to beat the best, and Coach Evan's squad has a chance to do that this season.

7 Hoover

The Bucs unexpectedly fell to the Auburn Tigers week one in blowout fashion. The moves Hoover down the list to 7. Now it will be up to them to see if they can rebound from that tough loss. Hoover returns home against Oak Grove (MS) Next week then starts region play against Vestavia.

8 Hewitt-Trussville

The Huskies fell in week one again to the Central Phenix City Red Devils. They will have a chance to rebound against non-region Gadsden City, then start region play against Oak Mountain.

9 Muscle Shoals

The Trojans are once again a darkhorse for the 6A title. They came all the way to the Semi-Finals before falling to Mountain Brook 28-7. This season the Trojans entered with a 48-14 win over 7A Region 4 foe Bob Jones. Muscle Shoals play's Florence in another 7A-6A matchup this week.

10 Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa

After a undefeated regular season in 2022, the Patriots look to follow it up with more playoff success this time around. a change at QB comes as Bryson Kimbrough takes over the reigns. Hillcrest no doubt should be another contender to watch in 6A.
